This is really the most exciting project we have in the works in St. Petersburg and it looks like the project is moving along.

I can’t wait to see what it is going to look like. Last week, a jury of community, architecture and design experts narrowed a list of 23 design teams interested in submitting plans for a new landmark Pier to nine semi-finalists.

This will be a fun day in owntown St. Petersburg and it is free. Satuday, September 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participating museums include the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, Florida Holocaust Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg Museum of History and the Dali Museum. Other venues that offer special events, gift shop discounts and more include Florida Craftsment, Cakewalk Artists' Coop, The Royal Theater Boys & Girls Club, the Morean Arts Center, Creative Clay, Pier Aquarium and Progress Energy Center for the Arts' Mahaffey Theater. Also included are Downtown Walking Tours at 10 a.m. and noon, offered by St. Petersburg Preservation. Park downtown and ride the Looper to most locations for just 25 cents. Treasure Island and its mailboxes.

Walking or driving around Treasure Island you will soon notice that some people get very creative when it comes to their mail boxes.

If you keep your eyes open here in Treasure Island you will notice some very special designs.

I just love them. For some reason Treasure Island here in Tampabay has the most unique mailboxes I have ever seen. See for yourself. 

St. Petersburg, do you see orange ribbon round trees ?

Have you see an orange ribbon around one of our St. Petersburg trees lately and ask yourself what on earth this is all about?  Well the city of St. Petersburg is participating in a tree inventory program funded by a grant from the Florida Urban Grant Forestry Program to help evaluate the benefits of St. Petersburg’s urban forest in parks and along city right-of-ways. The count will also include marking select trees and gathering information on species, size, health, location, possible concerns/hazards, site characteristics and historic/distinctive/gift trees St. Petersburg, do you see orange ribbon round trees ?

It happens to me every year and every year I am soooooooooooo surprised of how dependent we are on electricity. It is summer in Fl and with our big thunderstorm that roll in we often lose power. Usually it is for a few minutes but today I am out of power for 2 hours already and it is supposed to take another two hours. Drives me crazy !!!!!!!!!!!!! Trust me, until you really have a complete power outage you do not know how disabled you are. I have a ton of things to do today but 99% of them require internet. Well if the power is out the internet is out. You cannot listen to music, you can’t watch TV, you can’t cook, you can’t make a cup of coffee, you can’t, you can’t, and you can’t.  AND don’t forget, the AC is out of order too. It is scary how much we need electricity.

There's music a-plenty at Mardi Gras (from the French term, Marty Grass, meaning "the Lawn of Someone named Martin") on February 20th & 21st when the Kiwanis Mardi Gras comes to Treasure Island. We love the music so much, we've made up a song. Sing along, everybody, (to the tune of "On Broadway") especially you Wall Street CEOs! C'mon, harmonize!

I don't need to explain a thing, because I got more than any king.
And Congress will always give me more, on Wall Street.
Mardi Gras is a celebration also known as "shrovetide" and pancakes are the tradition (which means IHOP is a religious experience, in our book).

It's a racquet, it's a club
Ten years strong, our annual Gulf Beaches Rotary Golf & Tennis Challenge raises oodles of money for Treasure Island kids recreation programs and scholarships. And everybody is dressed so nice. Men personally iron their polo shirts for this event. The Italian Dinner and Auction is Friday the 20th at Treasure Bay; the golfing and tennis is Saturday the 21st. Do the RSVP thing today at 727-547-4575 ext. 237. And we recommend a steam iron.

The glamorous job of relining troublesome manholes
Beginning this week, 64 manhole interiors around Treasure Island will be refurbished with a giant pink (yes, pink) sheath to block groundwater seepage. (There are the makings of a joke here - but it would be so wrong.) But seriously, folks, some of our manholes are in terrible shape and reducing the amount of groundwater intrusion reduces the amount of sewage we pay to treat. The refurbishment process has no impact on sewer service and only takes a couple of hours per manhole. Then the contractor, CCI, moves on to the next manhole and the process begins again. For Nature, I'm David Attenborough - goodnight.

 IT'S CALLED A YARD SALE: Because nearly everything on sale comes from a garage. Isle of Capri does their Yard Sale this Saturday, February 14th, 8am to 1pm. Look for sweetheart deals at homes with the red hearts ... IF THE IMAGE OF RICHARD SIMMONS DISTURBS YOU: You'll be thinking "Ricky Martin" in no time after a 60-minute Zumba workout this Saturday at the TI Community Center. Just $5, with proceeds going to Team TI in the Relay For Life this April. Zumba starts at 2pm ... FOOD FOR THOUGHT: The best name for a library event, ever. The Gulf Beaches Public Library has invited a bunch of top-notch restaurants for their March 7th fundraiser. Tix are $20 and $30 and available at 727-391-2828. Beer and wine, too. Shindig gets underway at 6pm - get there early because the great food is practically inhaled ... YES, YOU DO NEED ANOTHER T-SHIRT: We still have some "Four Lanes of Freedom" t-shirts leftover from the bridge opening in August '07 and they're priced to move: $3 each or two for $5.
