St. Pete Beach, FL:  St. Pete Beach Aquatics is offering Water Safety Instructor Classes are beginning soon.  The classes will be held from 3:00pm to 7:00pm on Fridays at the Tampa Bay Turner Swim School.  Session I runs from March 12^th to April 23^rd and Session II runs from April 30^th to June 4^th.  Students must be 16 years old to enroll and course fees are $125.00 for residents $150.00 for non-residents.  For more information on becoming a Water Safety Instructor, contact the pool at 363-9264.

Happy and healthy in a tough economy, Saint Pete Beach

St. Pete Beach, FL:  The St. Pete Beach Community Center is now offering a class to keep you healthy and happy in this tough economy.  "Minerva's Healthy Living," led by instructor Liz Dalbo, teaches how to plan, shop and cook with a healthy perspective.  Learn how to read labels, eat more whole foods, and cook simple and fun meals and snacks while saving money.  Participants in the class will learn ways to stretch a dollar around the house by learning how to make homemade non-toxic cleaning supplies, recycle household items and more.  Every single class will cover tips on stretching your dollars, fitting in exercise and healthy eating and will help bring peace, fun and happiness to your life.  Classes are held Monday evenings from 7pm-8pm at the St. Pete Beach Community Center, 7701 Boca Ciega Drive.  Contact instructor Liz Dalbo at (727) 643-7525 for more information.

I was here some 15 years ago when we had the oil spill. Treasure Island and the other beach towns felt like ghost towns, all the tourists left within a day or two, I will never forget how sad it was to see all the dead birds and fish on the beach, businesses had to close down, restaurants were empty, black oil everywhere in the white sand. You could not walk on the beach anymore.................I hope I never have to see this again. There are lots of other ways to get energy. We are in Florida, the sunshine state for crying out loud EVERY HOME SHOULD HAVE SOLAR PANELS ON THE ROOF.

You've probably heard about ‘Hands Across the Sand' - an effort to raise awareness of efforts to drill for oil off our coast.  It is a coordinated effort throughout the entire state, with people lining up on the beaches to show opposition to drilling efforts.  Check out the details at www.handsacrossthesand.com.

There are groups organizing on all of our Gulf Beaches.  Just wanted to let you know that there will be a group out on Madeira Beach at 134^th Ave. and the official Madeira Beach group will be at Archibald Park, but hopefully the line will stretch between the two and beyond!  There will also be groups at Clearwater Beach/Pier 60, Upham Beach, TradeWinds Island Grand and TradeWinds Sandpiper Suites, Indian Rocks Beach, Ft. NEW PICKLEBALL LEAGUE NOW FORMING IN ST. PETE BEACH

ST. PETE BEACH, FL:  The Pickleball trend has been growing in popularity at the St. Pete Beach Community Center, so much so that a new Wednesday night league is now forming.  This league is open to anyone who enjoys the game and wants to take it to the next level with tournament-style play.  Teams of two people can register for the 8 to 10 week season for just $50.  Registration is going on now; call the Recreation Division at 363-9245 for details.  All games will take place at the St. Pete Beach Community Center, 7701 Boca Ciega Drive.

St. Pete Beach pool offers stroke clinics

St. Pete Beach, FL:  The St. Pete Beach Aquatic Center is now registering participants 18 years and older for new Adult Stroke Clinics, focusing on Stroke Technique, Stroke Development, and Stroke Refinement.  These clinics are designed for the swimmer looking to improve their front crawl for Triathlons, long distance swimming or master events.  Pool time will incorporate correction drills and the opportunity to practice and instill the newly-acquired skills.  The one-hour clinics will be held on February 13^th, February 27^th, March 13^th, March 27^th and April 10^th and cost $20 per clinic for St. Pete Beach residents and $25.00 for non-residents.  Call the Aquatic Center at 363-9264 or stop by 7701 Boca Ciega Drive to register.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS FAIR IN ST. PETE BEACH

PETE BEACH, FL:  The City of St. Pete Beach and the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce have partnered to host the "Building a Healthy Community" Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, February 27th from 11:00am to 1:00pm.  The fair will be held at the St. Pete Beach Community Center, 7701 Boca Ciega Drive, and is free and open to the public though donations for the Gulf Beaches Relay for Life can be made at the event.  A variety of businesses and organizations will be present with products, services and valuable information on health topics for people of every age.  Types of vendors include local hospitals and clinics, gyms and fitness programs, spas and massage therapists, natural and organic products and much more.  For more information contact the Recreation Division at 363-9256.

Saturday morning market in St. Petersburg

I just love the Saturday morning market here in downtown Saint Petersburg. My mother is visiting from Germany and right now I am dragging her all over town, so this morning we went to St. Pete and visited the market. We found wonderful whole grain bread made from a German recipe. The bread tastes awesome and it is healthy.

Sand Sculpture Competition in Treasure Island Tampabay

Here are all of last week's Sand Sculptures. It was a great event in Treasure Island Tampabay.

It was a three day festival with lots of food and drinks and music and fireworks etc.

Which one is your favorite?

I like number 7 the best. It looks like a real "sand castle"

Not so sure about the gorilla, but hey beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Treasure Island is a very active little beach town here in Tampabay. Last weekend we had a big event, the Sanding Ovations, a sand sculpture contest with artist coming from all over the US to participate.

This was my favorite Sand Sculpture, just because it was actually a Sand Castle in the truest sense of the word.

I am originally from Germany and came to the US 17 years ago. In my first year I was amazed, surprised and sometimes confused about all the differences between the US and Europe. By now I have gotten used to it but every now and then I see something that triggers the thought  "Only in America" in this case Treasure Island

We had the annual Sand Sculptor contest last weekend and our normally just sandy beach here in Treasure Island turned into this festival site.

So, only in America will you find a portable ATM machine right on the beach in the sand.

HAWAIIAN HULA IN ST. PETE BEACH
St. Pete Beach, FL:  Hawaiian Hula and a variety of other techniques are now taught at the St. Pete Beach Community Center.  Instructor Taumaia Quinnan teaches Hawaiian Hula for overall health and fitness which includes Tahitian slow and fast movement of hips to work the core and align the spine for great blood flow.  The course also uses Maori Poi balls of New Zealand to help arthritic hands, shoulders and all of the upper body.  All of these dances will greatly improve overall well-being and are helpful in improving golf scores and any other sports in mind.  For information on class dates, times and fees contact instructor Taumaia Quinnan at 727-289-4086.

Community-Wide Yard Sale in St. Pete Beach Tampabay. This is a fun thing to do in Saint Pete Beach

St. Pete Beach, FL:  The St. Pete Beach Community Center will be hosting a community-wide yard sale on Saturday, November 7^thfrom 8:00am to 1:00pm.  You can sell your own items for extra cash or come browse for bargains.  Cost for a vendor spot is $10 for SPB residents and $12.50 for non-residents.  Tables are $5 each while supplies last.  Sellers can begin setting up as early as 6:00am that morning at the Community Center, 7701 Boca Ciega Drive.  Registration will run from October 1^st through November 6^th or until all spots are full.  Call 363-92455 with questions.
